City Guide for: Victoria, Malta

Victoria, Malta Guide

Victoria, also known as Rabat, is the capital city of Gozo, Malta's sister island. This charming city is steeped in history, with its origins dating back to the Neolithic period. Dominated by the imposing Cittadella, a fortified city perched atop a hill, Victoria offers breathtaking panoramic views of the entire island. Beyond the Cittadella, Victoria boasts a vibrant atmosphere with bustling markets, narrow winding streets, and a wealth of historical and cultural attractions. Visitors can explore ancient churches, museums showcasing Gozitan heritage, and enjoy the authentic Maltese way of life. The city is a perfect base for exploring the rest of Gozo, with easy access to the island's stunning beaches, picturesque villages, and dramatic coastline.

Food & Cuisine

Gozitan cuisine is rustic and hearty, reflecting the island's agricultural heritage. Expect fresh, locally sourced ingredients like rabbit, goat cheese (Ġbejna), tomatoes, and olives. Ftira, a type of flatbread pizza, is a Gozitan specialty and a must-try. You can find excellent examples at various bakeries and restaurants throughout Victoria. For a more formal dining experience, consider restaurants around Independence Square (It-Tokk) or within the Cittadella, offering traditional Maltese dishes with stunning views. The daily market in Independence Square is a great place to sample local produce and cheeses. For a taste of authentic Gozitan cooking, look for restaurants serving rabbit stew (Stuffat tal-Fenek) or Gozitan ravioli.

Nightlife

Victoria's nightlife is generally more relaxed than that of Malta's main island. While not a party hub, there are several bars and restaurants that stay open late, particularly around Independence Square (It-Tokk) and St. George's Square. You can find a mix of traditional Maltese bars, wine bars, and restaurants offering live music on certain nights. For a livelier atmosphere, consider heading to Marsalforn, a coastal town a short bus ride from Victoria, which offers a wider selection of bars and restaurants catering to tourists.
