Fresh seafood is a staple, with grilled octopus, fried calamari, and various fish dishes readily available at tavernas along the coast. Don't miss the chance to try "revithokeftedes" (chickpea fritters), a local specialty. Samos is also famous for its sweet Muscat wine, which pairs perfectly with desserts like "katades" (a type of fried dough) or local honey. For a truly authentic experience, visit the local markets in Samos Town or Pythagorio to sample fresh produce, cheeses, and other regional delicacies. Many tavernas offer traditional Greek dishes like moussaka, souvlaki, and horiatiki salad (Greek salad).

Nightlife

Samos offers a diverse nightlife scene, ranging from laid-back tavernas to lively bars and clubs. Samos Town and Pythagorio are the main hubs for evening entertainment, with a variety of options to suit different tastes. In Samos Town, you'll find a mix of traditional tavernas with live music and modern bars with DJs. Pythagorio offers a more vibrant atmosphere, with beachfront bars and clubs that stay open late into the night. For a quieter evening, head to one of the smaller villages like Kokkari or Votsalakia, where you can enjoy a relaxing drink at a seaside taverna and soak up the peaceful atmosphere.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Samos is during the shoulder seasons, from April to June and September to October. During these months, the weather is warm and sunny, but not overly hot, and the crowds are smaller than in the peak summer months. The sea is also warm enough for swimming. July and August are the hottest and busiest months, with higher prices and more crowded beaches. If you're interested in hiking, spring and autumn are ideal, as the temperatures are milder and the landscapes are lush and green.

Transportation

Samos relies primarily on buses and taxis for public transportation. The bus network connects the main towns and villages, offering a relatively affordable way to explore the island. Schedules can be somewhat infrequent, especially outside of peak season, so it's wise to check timetables in advance. Taxis are readily available in the larger towns and at the airport, but they are generally more expensive than buses. Renting a car or scooter is a popular option for independent travelers, allowing you to explore the island at your own pace and reach more remote areas. Be aware that some roads, particularly in the mountainous regions, can be narrow and winding.

Airport

Samos International Airport "Aristarchos of Samos" (SMI) is located approximately 4 kilometers west of Pythagorio and about 20 kilometers from Samos Town. Taxis are readily available outside the airport terminal, and the journey to Pythagorio takes around 10 minutes, while the journey to Samos Town takes approximately 30 minutes. Bus services also connect the airport to Samos Town, but they are less frequent. Car rental agencies are located at the airport, providing a convenient option for exploring the island independently.
