Paje, Tanzania Guide

Paje is a vibrant village on the southeast coast of Zanzibar, Tanzania, renowned for its stunning white-sand beaches, turquoise waters, and consistent winds, making it a haven for kitesurfers. The village offers a relaxed and laid-back atmosphere, a stark contrast to the bustling Stone Town. It's a place where you can unwind, soak up the sun, and enjoy the authentic Zanzibari culture. Beyond the beach, Paje offers opportunities to explore the local culture through interactions with villagers, visits to seaweed farms, and sampling traditional Swahili cuisine. The village is also a great base for exploring other parts of Zanzibar, such as the Jozani Forest, home to the rare red colobus monkeys, and the spice farms that give Zanzibar its nickname, the "Spice Island."

Food & Cuisine

Paje offers a delightful array of Swahili cuisine, with a strong emphasis on fresh seafood. Grilled fish, octopus curry, and lobster are popular choices, often served with rice, chapati, or ugali (a maize-based porridge). You can find numerous small restaurants and beachside cafes offering these dishes at reasonable prices. For a more local experience, try visiting the Paje market, where you can sample street food like Zanzibar pizza (a savory crepe) and buy fresh fruits and spices. The Rock Restaurant, though located a short drive away, is a famous dining experience built on a rock in the ocean, offering stunning views and delicious seafood. Mr. Kahawa is a popular spot for breakfast and lunch, known for its healthy options and excellent coffee.

Nightlife

Paje's nightlife is relatively laid-back compared to other parts of Zanzibar, but it still offers a good selection of bars and beach parties. Many of the restaurants and cafes along the beach transform into lively bars in the evening, with music, cocktails, and bonfires. The area around the main beach road is where you'll find most of the action. Check out spots like B4 Beach Club and Jambo Beach Bungalows for regular parties and live music. Full Moon parties are also occasionally held on the beach, attracting a larger crowd.

Renting a scooter is also a popular option for exploring the surrounding areas, but be aware of the road conditions and drive cautiously. There is no tram or subway/metro system.
