Tetouan, Morocco Guide
Welcome to Tetouan, the "White Dove" of Morocco! Nestled in the Rif Mountains, just a stone's throw from the Mediterranean Sea, Tetouan offers a unique blend of Andalusian charm and Moroccan tradition. Its UNESCO-listed medina, a labyrinth of narrow alleyways and whitewashed houses, is a living museum, transporting you back in time with every turn. Beyond the medina, Tetouan boasts a vibrant modern city with bustling souks, elegant squares, and stunning views. Explore the Spanish colonial architecture, relax on nearby beaches, or hike in the surrounding mountains. Tetouan is a city that captivates with its history, culture, and natural beauty, offering an authentic Moroccan experience away from the larger tourist crowds.
Food & Cuisine
Tetouan's cuisine is a delightful fusion of Moroccan and Andalusian flavors. Expect to find tagines brimming with tender meat and vegetables, fragrant couscous dishes, and fresh seafood caught daily from the nearby Mediterranean. Be sure to try the local specialty, *pastilla*, a savory-sweet pie filled with pigeon or chicken, almonds, and spices. For an authentic experience, head to the medina's food stalls and sample street food like *bissara* (a hearty fava bean soup) and grilled meats. For a more formal dining experience, explore the restaurants in the Ville Nouvelle (new city), offering a range of Moroccan and international cuisine. Don't miss the opportunity to visit the local markets for fresh produce, spices, and traditional sweets.
Nightlife
Tetouan's nightlife is more relaxed than in some of Morocco's larger cities, but there are still options for evening entertainment. Many cafes stay open late, offering mint tea, coffee, and pastries. The Ville Nouvelle has a selection of bars and restaurants that are popular with locals and tourists alike. For a more traditional experience, consider attending a cultural performance or enjoying live music at a local riad. While Tetouan doesn't have a booming club scene, the focus is more on socializing and enjoying the atmosphere of the city. The area around Place Moulay El Mehdi in the Ville Nouvelle is a good place to start your evening.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Tetouan is during the spring (April-May) or autumn (September-October). The weather is mild and pleasant, perfect for exploring the medina and enjoying outdoor activities. Summer (June-August) can be hot, especially in the afternoons, but the nearby beaches offer a welcome escape. Winter (November-March) can be cooler and wetter, but the city is still charming and less crowded.
Transportation
Getting around Tetouan is relatively easy. The city has a network of local buses (operated by ALSA) that are inexpensive and cover most areas. Taxis are also readily available and are a convenient option for shorter distances. Be sure to agree on a price beforehand, especially with petit taxis (smaller, red taxis that operate within the city limits). Grand taxis (larger, often white or beige taxis) are used for longer distances and travel between cities. There is no tram or subway/metro system in Tetouan. Walking is the best way to explore the medina, as the narrow streets are not accessible by car.
Airport
The nearest airport to Tetouan is Sania Ramel Airport (TTU), located approximately 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) southeast of the city center. Taxis are readily available at the airport and are the most convenient way to reach Tetouan. The journey takes around 15-20 minutes, depending on traffic. You can also pre-book a private transfer.
