Food & Cuisine
Johor Bahru is a foodie paradise, offering a diverse range of culinary delights that reflect its multicultural heritage. From traditional Malay dishes to Chinese and Indian specialties, there's something to satisfy every palate. Laksa Johor, a rich and creamy coconut-based noodle soup, is a must-try local specialty. Other popular dishes include Mee Rebus, Kacang Pool, and Otak-Otak. For an authentic experience, head to Jalan Dhoby, a street lined with hawker stalls and cafes serving up delicious local fare. Restoran Ya Wang is a popular spot for Chinese seafood, while Restoran ZZ Sup Tulang is famous for its flavorful bone marrow soup. For a more modern dining experience, explore the cafes and restaurants in Taman Molek. Don't forget to visit the local markets like Pasar Karat (JB Bazaar) for a taste of local snacks and treats.
Nightlife
Johor Bahru's nightlife scene is evolving, offering a mix of traditional and modern entertainment options. Jalan Dhoby and its surrounding streets are a good place to start, with a variety of bars, pubs, and live music venues. Holiday Plaza is another area with a concentration of bars and karaoke lounges. For a more upscale experience, head to the rooftop bars at some of the hotels, offering stunning views of the city skyline. The Puteri Harbour area also has some nice restaurants and bars with a more relaxed atmosphere. While JB's nightlife might not be as wild as some other Southeast Asian cities, it offers a more laid-back and authentic experience.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Johor Bahru is during the dry season, which typically runs from March to September. During these months, you can expect sunny skies and lower humidity, making it ideal for exploring the city and its surrounding attractions. The shoulder seasons (February and October) can also be pleasant, with fewer crowds and still relatively good weather. Avoid visiting during the monsoon season (November to January), as heavy rainfall can disrupt your travel plans.
Transportation
Getting around Johor Bahru is relatively easy, though navigating can sometimes be a bit challenging without local knowledge. Buses are the most common form of public transport, connecting various parts of the city and even extending to Singapore. However, bus routes can be complex and schedules are not always readily available. Taxis and ride-hailing services like Grab are readily available and offer a more convenient option, especially for reaching specific destinations. The Iskandar Malaysia Bus Rapid Transit (IMBRT) is a planned bus rapid transit system aimed at improving connectivity within the Iskandar Malaysia region, but it is still under development. There is no subway or tram system currently operating in Johor Bahru.
Airport
Johor Bahru is served by Senai International Airport (JHB), located approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) northwest of the city center. The most convenient way to get from the airport to the city is by taxi or ride-hailing service (Grab). The journey takes around 30-45 minutes, depending on traffic. There is also a public bus service (Causeway Link) that connects the airport to JB Sentral, the city's main transportation hub. From JB Sentral, you can easily access other parts of the city by bus, taxi, or Grab.
