Teleférico de Mérida (Mukumbarí) Guide
Reach for the Sky: Ascend the Majestic Mukumbarí Cable Car Guide
Prepare for an unforgettable journey to the summit of Pico Espejo with the Teleférico de Mérida, also known as Mukumbarí. This is the highest and second-longest cable car in the world, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Venezuelan Andes. The experience is more than just a ride; it's an immersion into the stunning natural beauty of the region, a chance to witness unique ecosystems, and an opportunity to challenge yourself at high altitude. The original Teleférico de Mérida was a marvel of engineering, completed in 1960. It operated for nearly five decades before undergoing a complete reconstruction. The new Mukumbarí, inaugurated in 2016, boasts state-of-the-art technology and enhanced safety features. The cable car is divided into five sections, each ascending to a different station: Barinitas, La Montaña, La Aguada, Loma Redonda, and Pico Espejo. Each station offers unique perspectives and activities. At each station, you can explore the surrounding landscapes, take stunning photographs, and acclimatize to the altitude. At Loma Redonda, you'll find restaurants and craft shops. The ultimate destination, Pico Espejo, offers unparalleled views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. Be prepared for cold temperatures and thin air at the summit. Activities include hiking (at lower stations), enjoying the views, and simply soaking in the awe-inspiring atmosphere. Remember to dress warmly and take it easy as you adjust to the altitude.
