Kukenan Tepui Guide
Kukenan Tepui: The 'Matawi-tepui' - A Majestic Table-Top Mountain in the Clouds Guide
Kukenan Tepui, also known as Matawi-tepui, is one of the most iconic and visually stunning tepuis in the Gran Sabana region of Venezuela. Rising dramatically from the surrounding savannah, this table-top mountain is a sight to behold. Its sheer cliffs and unique rock formations create a landscape that feels both ancient and otherworldly. While climbing to the summit is extremely challenging and requires specialized skills, simply gazing upon Kukenan Tepui is an awe-inspiring experience. Like other tepuis in the region, Kukenan Tepui is a remnant of an ancient sandstone plateau that has eroded over millions of years. Its isolation has allowed for the evolution of unique plant and animal species, many of which are endemic to the tepui. The Pemon people, the indigenous inhabitants of the Gran Sabana, hold Kukenan Tepui sacred, believing it to be a place of great spiritual power. While climbing Kukenan Tepui is not for the faint of heart, there are still ways to experience its majesty. Many tours offer viewpoints from which you can admire the tepui's grandeur. Hiking to the base of the mountain is also a popular option, allowing you to appreciate its scale and beauty up close. The surrounding savannah offers opportunities for wildlife spotting and exploring the unique flora of the region. As with the Gran Sabana in general, culinary experiences will be centered around Venezuelan cuisine found in nearby towns and villages.

Kukenan Tepui is best accessed from Santa Elena de Uairén. From there, you'll need to hire a 4x4 vehicle with a driver to reach the starting point for hikes or viewpoints.
