Casapueblo: A Sculptural Masterpiece by the Sea Guide

Casapueblo is more than just a building; it's a living, breathing sculpture perched dramatically on the cliffs of Punta Ballena, near Punta del Este, Uruguay. This iconic whitewashed structure, resembling a cross between a Greek village and a Gaudi creation, is a must-see for any visitor to the region. It's a hotel, museum, and art gallery all rolled into one, offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and a unique artistic experience. Casapueblo was the creation of Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró. Construction began in 1958, initially intended as a simple summer house and workshop. Over the years, it organically grew and evolved, reflecting Vilaró's artistic vision and his deep connection to the sea. He dedicated the building to his missing son, Carlos Miguel, who disappeared in the Andes plane crash in 1972. The building stands as a testament to hope and resilience. Visitors can explore the museum, which showcases Vilaró's paintings, sculptures, and ceramics, all inspired by his travels and his love for the Uruguayan landscape. You can also stay in the hotel, enjoying the unique architecture and stunning ocean views. Don't miss the daily "Ceremony of the Sun," where a recording of Vilaró's voice recites a poem dedicated to the setting sun. The on-site restaurant offers delicious Uruguayan cuisine with unparalleled views. While not a specific culinary tradition tied solely to Casapueblo, you can enjoy fresh seafood and traditional Uruguayan dishes like *chivito* (a steak sandwich) and *asado* (barbecue).
