Mariposa Grove: Walk Among Giants Guide
Step into a world of awe and wonder at the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias, home to over 500 mature giant sequoia trees. These ancient giants, some of the largest and oldest living things on Earth, will leave you speechless with their immense size and majestic presence. Wander through the grove's trails and marvel at these natural wonders, including the Grizzly Giant, the California Tunnel Tree, and the Faithful Couple. The Mariposa Grove has a rich history, dating back to its discovery by European Americans in 1857. It quickly became a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from around the world. In 1864, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Yosemite Grant, protecting Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove, marking a significant milestone in the history of conservation. The grove has undergone restoration efforts in recent years to improve visitor access and protect the sequoias' delicate ecosystem. Explore the grove via a network of trails, ranging from easy boardwalks to more challenging hikes. Take the free shuttle from the Mariposa Grove Welcome Plaza to the Lower Grove. Walk among the giants, taking in their immense size and appreciating their age. Learn about the sequoias' life cycle and the threats they face from fire and climate change. Photography is a must, but remember to be respectful of the trees and their environment. While there are no specific culinary traditions associated with the grove itself, pack a picnic to enjoy in a designated area.
