Thor's Well Guide
Thor's Well: Where the Ocean Drains Away (Or Does It?) Guide
Prepare to be mesmerized by Thor's Well, a natural wonder located just south of Yachats, Oregon. This seemingly bottomless sinkhole, carved into the basalt shoreline, creates a dramatic spectacle as waves crash around and into it, appearing to drain the ocean itself. It's a photographer's dream and a must-see for anyone visiting the Oregon Coast. Just remember to keep a safe distance, especially during high tide and stormy weather! While Thor's Well might look like a portal to another dimension, it's actually a collapsed sea cave. Over time, the relentless pounding of the Pacific eroded the cave's roof, creating this unique geological feature. The "well" is only about 20 feet deep, but the illusion of it being much deeper is part of its allure. The surrounding basalt rocks, sculpted by the ocean's power, add to the dramatic landscape. The primary activity at Thor's Well is witnessing its raw power and capturing stunning photographs. Arrive an hour or two before high tide for the most dramatic displays. Be extremely cautious and stay well back from the edge, as rogue waves can be unpredictable and dangerous. Explore the tide pools nearby at low tide for a glimpse of marine life. While there aren't specific culinary traditions directly associated with Thor's Well, Yachats offers a variety of seafood restaurants where you can enjoy fresh catches after your visit.
Transportation
Thor's Well is located off Highway 101, about 3 miles south of Yachats. There's a small parking area across the highway from the Cook's Chasm viewpoint. From the parking area, a short, paved path leads to the viewpoint and a trail down to the rocky shoreline. Be aware that the trail can be slippery, especially when wet.
