Hike, Bike, or Ride the Historic Bizz Johnson Trail Guide

This converted rail-trail offers a gentle grade and stunning views of the Susan River Canyon, making it perfect for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Experience the beauty of the Lassen National Forest and the charm of the surrounding communities. The Bizz Johnson Trail's history is tied to the railroad era. The trail follows the former Fernley and Lassen Branch Line of the Southern Pacific Railroad, which was built in the early 20th century to transport timber and agricultural products. The railroad operated until the 1970s, when it was abandoned. In the 1980s, the right-of-way was converted into a recreational trail, named in honor of Congressman Harold T. "Bizz" Johnson, who championed the project. The Bizz Johnson Trail offers a variety of activities for outdoor enthusiasts. Hike or bike the entire trail, or choose a shorter section for a leisurely stroll. Enjoy the scenic views of the Susan River Canyon, the surrounding forests, and the historic railroad tunnels and bridges. Horseback riding is also permitted on certain sections of the trail. The nearby town of Westwood offers a few local eateries with classic American fare, and the trail itself is perfect for packing a picnic to enjoy amidst the natural beauty.
