Tohono Chul, meaning "desert corner" in the Tohono O'odham language, has evolved from a private residence into a beloved public space. In the early 1980s, Richard and Jean Wilson purchased the land and began transforming it into a botanical garden and cultural center. Their vision was to preserve the natural landscape and showcase the art and culture of the Sonoran Desert region. Over the years, Tohono Chul has grown to encompass 49 acres, featuring themed gardens, art galleries, a museum, and a charming tea room. It stands as a testament to the beauty and resilience of the desert environment and the rich cultural heritage of the Southwest. At Tohono Chul, you can embark on a self-guided tour of the botanical gardens, marveling at the towering saguaros, delicate wildflowers, and unique desert plants. Explore the art galleries, which feature rotating exhibitions of contemporary and traditional Southwestern art. Attend a workshop or lecture to learn more about desert ecology, gardening, or art. Indulge in a delicious meal at the Garden Bistro, which serves Southwestern-inspired cuisine using fresh, local ingredients. Don't miss the chance to browse the gift shops for unique souvenirs and handcrafted items. The park also hosts special events throughout the year, including concerts, festivals, and holiday celebrations. The Garden Bistro offers a delightful culinary experience, showcasing the flavors of the Southwest.
