Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore Guide

Conquer the Dunes: A Natural Playground on Lake Michigan Guide

Welcome to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, a breathtaking expanse of natural beauty along the shores of Lake Michigan. This national park boasts towering sand dunes, pristine beaches, lush forests, and crystal-clear inland lakes, offering a diverse landscape for exploration and adventure. Whether you're seeking thrilling outdoor activities or a peaceful escape into nature, Sleeping Bear Dunes promises an unforgettable experience. The history of the Sleeping Bear Dunes is intertwined with Native American legends and the forces of nature. The name originates from an Ojibwe legend about a mother bear and her two cubs who swam across Lake Michigan seeking refuge from a fire. The mother bear reached the shore and waited for her cubs, who eventually perished. The Great Spirit marked the spot where she sat with a large dune, and the two cubs became the Manitou Islands. The dunes themselves were formed over thousands of years by glacial activity and wind erosion, creating the dramatic landscape we see today. Sleeping Bear Dunes offers a wide array of activities for visitors of all ages and interests. Hike the iconic Dune Climb for panoramic views of Lake Michigan, explore the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive with its stunning overlooks, or relax on the sandy beaches of Platte River Point. Kayaking or canoeing on the Platte River is a popular choice, as is hiking the numerous trails that wind through the forests and dunes. In the winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are excellent ways to experience the park's beauty. Don't forget to visit the historic Glen Haven Village, a preserved logging town that offers a glimpse into the area's past.
