Scenic Drive Guide
Capitol Reef's Scenic Drive: A Journey Through Time and Stone Guide
Embark on an unforgettable journey through the heart of Capitol Reef National Park with the Scenic Drive! This paved road winds its way through the Fruita orchards and alongside the towering cliffs of the Waterpocket Fold, offering breathtaking views at every turn. It's a fantastic way to experience the park's geological wonders and historical sites from the comfort of your vehicle. Allow ample time to stop at the various viewpoints and soak in the beauty of this unique landscape. The Scenic Drive follows a route that has been used for centuries, first by indigenous peoples and later by Mormon pioneers. The road provides access to the historic Fruita Schoolhouse, the Gifford House, and numerous hiking trails. As you drive, imagine the challenges faced by early settlers as they carved out a life in this rugged terrain. The drive itself is a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance. The Scenic Drive offers numerous opportunities for exploration. Stop at the Gifford House to purchase homemade pies, jams, and other treats made using traditional recipes. Hike the easy trail to the Fruita Schoolhouse to learn about education in the early 20th century. For a more challenging adventure, hike to Hickman Bridge or explore the Grand Wash. The Scenic Drive is also a great place for wildlife viewing, so keep an eye out for deer, birds, and other animals. While the Gifford House offers some culinary treats, the town of Torrey, just outside the park, has a wider selection of restaurants.
