Experience the geological wonders of Capitol Reef National Park from the comfort of your car on the Capitol Reef Scenic Drive. This paved road winds through the heart of the park, offering breathtaking views of towering cliffs, colorful canyons, and ancient rock formations. It's a perfect way to appreciate the park's beauty, especially for those with limited time or mobility. The Capitol Reef area has a rich history, both geological and human. The Waterpocket Fold, a 100-mile long wrinkle in the earth's crust, is the park's defining feature, formed millions of years ago by the uplift of the Colorado Plateau. The Fremont culture inhabited the area for centuries, leaving behind petroglyphs and other evidence of their presence. Later, Mormon pioneers settled in the area, establishing the community of Fruita, which is now a historic district within the park. The primary activity on the Scenic Drive is, of course, driving! However, there are numerous pullouts and viewpoints along the way where you can stop to take photos, admire the scenery, and learn about the park's geology and history. Several short hiking trails also branch off from the Scenic Drive, allowing you to explore the area on foot. The historic Fruita orchards are a popular attraction, where you can pick your own fruit during the harvest season. The Gifford House, located in Fruita, offers homemade pies, ice cream, and other treats, providing a taste of the area's pioneer heritage.
Transportation
The Capitol Reef Scenic Drive begins near the Capitol Reef National Park Visitor Center. From Highway 24, turn south onto the Scenic Drive. A park entrance fee is required to access the Scenic Drive. The road is paved and suitable for most vehicles. The free shuttle within the park can drop you off near the start of the drive.
