Boothill Graveyard Guide
Boothill Graveyard: Where Legends Rest in Peace Guide
Step back in time and walk among the dusty plots of Boothill Graveyard, Tombstone's final resting place for outlaws, pioneers, and victims of the Wild West. More than just a cemetery, Boothill is a tangible link to the town's turbulent past, offering a glimpse into the lives and deaths of those who shaped the legend of Tombstone. Prepare to be transported to a bygone era as you wander through this iconic landmark. Boothill's history is as colorful as the characters buried within its grounds. Established in the late 1870s, it served as the town's primary cemetery until a new one was established outside of town. The name "Boothill" was a common term for cemeteries where those who "died with their boots on" were buried, often violently. Among the notable residents are Billy Clanton and the McLaury brothers, who met their end at the infamous O.K. Corral gunfight. Many graves are marked with simple wooden crosses or weathered headstones, often bearing epitaphs that tell tales of hardship, adventure, and untimely demise. A visit to Boothill Graveyard is a self-guided experience, allowing you to explore at your own pace. Take your time to read the headstones, imagine the lives of those buried there, and soak in the atmosphere of the Old West. You can purchase a map and guide at the entrance to help you locate specific graves and learn more about the individuals buried there. Don't forget your camera – the stark landscape and weathered markers make for some truly memorable photos. While Tombstone doesn't have a unique culinary tradition tied directly to Boothill, be sure to sample some classic Western fare in town, like hearty chili, steak, or a sarsaparilla, to complete your historical immersion.
