Bridal Veil Falls: Colorado's Tallest Free-Falling Waterfall! Guide

Witness the majesty of Bridal Veil Falls, Colorado's tallest free-falling waterfall, cascading 365 feet down a sheer cliff face. This iconic landmark is a must-see for any visitor to Telluride, offering a breathtaking spectacle of natural beauty. Whether you admire it from afar or venture closer for a more immersive experience, Bridal Veil Falls will leave you in awe of its power and grace. The falls are especially stunning in the spring and early summer when snowmelt swells the water flow. Perched atop the falls is the historic Bridal Veil Powerhouse, once one of the world's highest operating hydroelectric plants. Built in 1907, the powerhouse provided electricity to the Smuggler-Union Mine and later to the town of Telluride. It was abandoned in the 1950s but was later restored and is now used to generate clean energy. The powerhouse adds a unique historical element to the natural beauty of the falls, showcasing the ingenuity of early pioneers in harnessing the power of nature. There are several ways to experience Bridal Veil Falls. You can admire it from a distance along the highway, or hike or bike along the Bridal Veil Road (a challenging unpaved road) for a closer view. For a more adventurous experience, consider a guided climbing tour that takes you to the base of the falls. In the winter, ice climbing is a popular activity for experienced climbers. While there are no specific culinary traditions directly associated with the falls, pack a picnic to enjoy amidst the stunning scenery. Alternatively, grab a bite to eat in Telluride before or after your visit.

Transportation

Bridal Veil Falls is accessible via Bridal Veil Road, a challenging unpaved road that is best suited for high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles. The road is typically open from late spring to early fall, depending on snow conditions. Alternatively, you can hike or bike up the road. The hike is approximately 4 miles each way and gains significant elevation. Be prepared for a strenuous climb. Many local tour operators offer guided tours to the falls in specialized vehicles. The Galloping Goose free bus does not directly service Bridal Veil Falls.
