Navajo Falls: A Desert Oasis in Havasu Canyon Guide
Navajo Falls, located in the remote Havasu Canyon near Supai, Arizona, is a breathtaking waterfall and a true desert oasis. Part of the Havasupai Indian Reservation, this stunning cascade plunges roughly 50 feet into a series of turquoise pools, creating a scene of unparalleled beauty. The vibrant colors of the water, contrasted against the red canyon walls, make it a photographer's dream and a must-see destination for adventurous travelers. The Havasupai people, whose name means "people of the blue-green waters," have inhabited this area for centuries. Their connection to the land is deeply spiritual, and they consider the waterfalls sacred. While the falls themselves are relatively recent geological formations, the canyon's history stretches back millions of years, carved by the relentless flow of the Havasu Creek. Respect for the Havasupai culture and environment is paramount when visiting. Visitors to Navajo Falls can enjoy swimming in the refreshing pools, hiking along the creek, and simply soaking in the natural beauty. Remember to obtain the necessary permits and reservations well in advance, as access is limited to protect the fragile ecosystem and the Havasupai way of life. The hike to the falls is challenging, requiring a 10-mile trek from Hualapai Hilltop to the village of Supai, followed by an additional 2-mile hike to the falls. Pack plenty of water, snacks, and appropriate hiking gear. While there are no restaurants directly at the falls, the village of Supai offers limited dining options featuring traditional Native American cuisine. Fry bread is a local specialty worth trying.
