Zion's history stretches back to ancient Native American cultures who inhabited the area for thousands of years. The park's name comes from the Mormon pioneers who settled in the region in the mid-19th century, inspired by the biblical Zion. Officially established as a national park in 1919, Zion has become a beloved destination for outdoor enthusiasts from around the globe. The park's unique geology, shaped by erosion and tectonic activity, creates a dramatic landscape that is both awe-inspiring and humbling. Zion offers a wide range of activities to suit all interests and abilities. Hike the iconic Angels Landing (permit required) for panoramic views, or explore the refreshing waters of The Narrows. Take a scenic drive along the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway, marveling at the towering rock formations. For a more relaxed experience, enjoy a picnic by the Virgin River or take a guided horseback ride. While Zion doesn't have a specific culinary tradition within the park itself, the nearby town of Springdale offers a variety of restaurants serving Southwestern cuisine and classic American fare.
