Greenwood Plantation: A Phoenix Rising from the Ashes Guide
Discover the story of resilience and rebirth at Greenwood Plantation, a stunning Greek Revival mansion that has risen from the ashes of a devastating fire. Explore the meticulously rebuilt mansion, wander through the picturesque grounds, and learn about the fascinating story of this iconic Louisiana landmark. The original Greenwood Plantation was built in 1830 by William Ruffin Barrow, a wealthy planter who sought to create a grand estate that reflected his status and wealth. The mansion was renowned for its opulent furnishings, its impressive architecture, and its beautiful gardens. Sadly, in 1960, a fire destroyed the original Greenwood, leaving only the columns standing. However, determined to preserve the legacy of the plantation, the current owners painstakingly rebuilt Greenwood, using historical records and photographs to recreate the mansion as closely as possible to its original design. Today, visitors can take guided tours of the rebuilt mansion to learn about the history of Greenwood Plantation, the Barrow family, and the challenges they faced. Explore the beautifully landscaped grounds, which feature ancient oak trees, formal gardens, and a serene lake. The plantation also hosts special events and weddings, offering a unique and memorable setting for celebrations. While Greenwood doesn't have a specific culinary tradition tied directly to the plantation itself, the area is known for its Southern cuisine. Nearby restaurants in St. Francisville offer a variety of traditional dishes, such as gumbo, jambalaya, and crawfish étouffée.
