The Narrows Guide
Hike Through the Heart of Zion: Experience The Narrows Guide
The Narrows is one of Zion National Park's most iconic and unique hikes, requiring you to wade, swim, and hike through the Virgin River as it carves its way through a narrow slot canyon. It's an unforgettable adventure that immerses you in the heart of Zion's stunning natural beauty. The towering canyon walls, sculpted by centuries of flowing water, create a truly awe-inspiring experience. The Virgin River has been shaping The Narrows for millions of years, slowly carving its way through the Navajo sandstone. The area has been inhabited by humans for thousands of years, with evidence of early Native American settlements found throughout Zion Canyon. The Narrows became a popular hiking destination in the early 20th century, attracting adventurers seeking a unique and challenging experience. Visitors can choose from several different hiking options in The Narrows, ranging from a short stroll up the river from the Temple of Sinawava to a multi-day backpacking trip. The most popular option is the "Bottom-Up" hike, which allows you to explore the lower section of The Narrows without a permit. Be sure to rent appropriate footwear and hiking poles from outfitters in Springdale, as the riverbed can be slippery and uneven. Check the weather forecast and river conditions before your hike, as flash floods can occur. After your hike, enjoy a meal in Springdale, where you can find restaurants serving Southwestern cuisine, often featuring local ingredients like prickly pear and Utah honey.
Transportation
Take the free Zion Canyon Shuttle to the Temple of Sinawava (the last stop). From there, follow the paved Riverside Walk to the entrance of The Narrows. During peak season, parking at the Visitor Center fills up quickly, so using the shuttle is highly recommended.
