East Mesa Trail Guide
Escape the Crowds: Hike the East Mesa Trail in Zion Guide
Discover a hidden gem within Zion National Park: the East Mesa Trail. This relatively easy hike offers stunning views of Zion Canyon from a unique perspective, far from the crowds that flock to the more popular trails. If you're looking for solitude and breathtaking scenery, the East Mesa Trail is a must-do. The East Mesa Trail provides access to Observation Point, one of the most iconic viewpoints in Zion Canyon. While the traditional route to Observation Point via the Weeping Rock Trail is currently closed due to a rockfall, the East Mesa Trail offers an alternative (and arguably more rewarding) way to reach this incredible vista. The trail meanders through a ponderosa pine forest, offering shade and respite from the desert sun. The main activity on the East Mesa Trail is, of course, hiking! The trail is approximately 6.7 miles roundtrip and is considered relatively easy, with a gradual elevation gain. The highlight is reaching Observation Point, where you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of Zion Canyon, including iconic landmarks like Angels Landing and the Virgin River. Pack plenty of water and snacks, and be sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes. While the East Mesa Trail is located outside the main canyon area, Springdale offers a variety of dining options after your hike.
Transportation
To reach the East Mesa Trailhead, you'll need to drive. From Springdale, drive east on Highway 9 towards the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel. Before reaching the tunnel, turn north onto the North Fork Road (also known as the Kolob Terrace Road). Follow this road for approximately 6 miles, then turn right onto a dirt road (the Smithsonian Butte Road). Continue on this dirt road for about 5 miles to reach the East Mesa Trailhead. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended for the dirt road, especially after rain.
Ticket Price
Entrance to Zion National Park is required. A 7-day vehicle pass costs $35.
