Court of the Patriarchs Guide
Court of the Patriarchs: Witness Zion's Majestic Giants Guide
The Court of the Patriarchs is a prominent rock formation in Zion National Park, consisting of three towering sandstone peaks named after biblical figures: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. These majestic formations stand as silent sentinels, guarding the entrance to Zion Canyon and offering breathtaking views that capture the essence of the park's grandeur. A viewpoint along the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive provides the best vantage point for admiring these natural monuments. While not directly tied to specific historical events within Zion Canyon itself, the naming of the Court of the Patriarchs reflects the early settlers' interpretation of the landscape through a religious lens. These pioneers, deeply influenced by their faith, saw parallels between the biblical stories and the dramatic scenery of Zion, leading them to bestow these evocative names upon the prominent landmarks. The names have stuck, adding a layer of cultural significance to the already awe-inspiring natural formations. While there's no hiking trail directly to the base of the Court of the Patriarchs, the viewpoint offers ample opportunities for photography and contemplation. Many visitors enjoy simply gazing at the towering peaks, marveling at their scale and beauty. The viewpoint is also a popular spot for picnicking and enjoying the surrounding scenery. Consider combining your visit with a hike on one of the nearby trails, such as the Pa'rus Trail or the Lower Emerald Pool Trail, to fully experience the wonders of Zion Canyon.
Transportation
During the shuttle season (typically March to late November), personal vehicles are restricted from driving the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. Take the free Zion Canyon Shuttle from the Zion Canyon Visitor Center. The Court of the Patriarchs viewpoint is located at Shuttle Stop 4.
