Oregon Buttes Guide
Oregon Buttes: Sentinels of the Oregon Trail Guide
Step back in time and witness the iconic Oregon Buttes, two prominent rock formations that served as vital landmarks for pioneers traveling the Oregon Trail in the 19th century. Located near South Pass City, Wyoming, these buttes stand as silent witnesses to the hardships and hopes of those who sought a new life in the West. Their distinctive shape made them easily recognizable from afar, offering reassurance and guidance to weary travelers. The Oregon Buttes gained prominence during the peak years of the Oregon Trail, from the 1840s to the 1860s. Emigrants relied on guidebooks and word-of-mouth descriptions to navigate the vast and often featureless plains. The buttes, along with other landmarks like Independence Rock and Chimney Rock, became crucial navigational aids. Seeing the Oregon Buttes meant that travelers were approaching the Continental Divide at South Pass, a relatively low and easily traversable point in the Rocky Mountains. Today, visitors can hike to the base of the Oregon Buttes and imagine the scene as wagon trains passed by. The area offers excellent opportunities for photography, capturing the stark beauty of the Wyoming landscape. Explore nearby South Pass City State Historic Site, a preserved gold mining town that provides a glimpse into the lives of those who settled in the region. While South Pass City offers some dining options, packing a picnic lunch is a great way to enjoy the scenery around the Oregon Buttes.
