The Hunter-Dawson house was built in the 1850s by William Hunter, a successful businessman and farmer. It passed through several generations of the Hunter and Dawson families, each leaving their mark on the property. The site's preservation is a testament to the dedication of those who recognized its historical significance, ensuring that future generations could learn about this important period in Missouri's history. Today, the site stands as a reminder of the social and economic structures of the pre-Civil War South, offering valuable insights into the lives of both the privileged and the enslaved. Visitors can explore the meticulously restored rooms, filled with original furnishings and artifacts that paint a vivid picture of daily life. Guided tours are available, providing in-depth information about the Hunter and Dawson families, the architecture of the house, and the historical context of the period. Special events and demonstrations are often held, offering hands-on experiences like period cooking or craft demonstrations.
