Shaniko's story is one of rapid growth and equally rapid decline. Founded in the late 1800s, it quickly became a vital transportation hub for wool and other goods, thanks to its strategic location. The arrival of the Columbia Southern Railway in 1900 cemented its status as a major commercial center. However, the railway's extension further south in 1911 bypassed Shaniko, leading to its economic downfall. The museum meticulously chronicles this boom-and-bust cycle, showcasing the ingenuity and resilience of the people who called Shaniko home. At the Shaniko Museum, you can wander through meticulously recreated period rooms, imagining life in a bustling frontier town. Examine antique tools and equipment used by ranchers and farmers, and marvel at the fashion and household items of the era. Don't miss the extensive collection of photographs that vividly depict Shaniko's heyday. While in Shaniko, be sure to explore the rest of the town, including the historic Shaniko Hotel and the old schoolhouse, to fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere of this preserved ghost town.
