Moro Rock is a granite dome located in Sequoia National Park, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. This iconic landmark is a must-see for any visitor to the park, providing an unforgettable experience as you ascend its stairway to the summit. While Moro Rock itself doesn't have a long or complex history, its geological formation dates back millions of years. It's a part of the Sierra Nevada batholith, a massive body of intrusive igneous rock that formed deep underground and was later exposed by erosion. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) constructed the stairway to the summit in the 1930s, making the incredible views accessible to a wider range of visitors. The primary activity at Moro Rock is, of course, climbing the 400 steps to the top. The stairway is relatively steep and can be challenging for some, but the reward is well worth the effort. Once at the summit, you can soak in the stunning 360-degree views, take memorable photos, and simply enjoy the feeling of being on top of the world. Remember to bring water and wear appropriate footwear for the climb.
Transportation
During peak season (typically late May through September), the Moro Rock/Crescent Meadow Road is closed to private vehicles. You'll need to take the free park shuttle from the Giant Forest Museum or Lodgepole to reach Moro Rock. Outside of peak season, you can drive directly to the parking area at the base of the rock.
