Lake Ozette: A Coastal Wilderness Escape Guide

Lake Ozette, nestled within Olympic National Park, offers a unique blend of freshwater lake and coastal wilderness experiences. This is the largest unpolluted lake in Washington state, surrounded by lush rainforest and providing access to some of the most stunning and remote stretches of coastline in the park. Whether you're a seasoned backpacker or a nature enthusiast seeking a peaceful escape, Lake Ozette promises an unforgettable adventure. The Ozette Loop is a popular backpacking trail that combines lake and coastal hiking. The trail leads through dense rainforest, across boardwalks, and along pristine beaches, offering breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and the rugged coastline. Explore the petroglyphs at Wedding Rocks, ancient carvings left by the Makah people. Keep an eye out for wildlife, including black bears, Roosevelt elk, and a variety of bird species. Remember to obtain a wilderness permit for overnight camping. While Lake Ozette itself doesn't have specific culinary offerings, you can pack your own meals and enjoy a picnic lunch by the lake or on the beach. The nearby town of Sekiu offers restaurants and grocery stores where you can stock up on supplies before your trip. Consider bringing a portable stove to prepare hot meals while camping, and be sure to pack out all your trash to preserve the pristine environment.
