River Street: Savannah's Waterfront Hub of History, Food, and Fun Guide

Get ready to immerse yourself in the vibrant energy of Historic River Street! This bustling waterfront area, stretching along the Savannah River, is a must-see for any visitor. Cobblestone streets, historic warehouses transformed into shops and restaurants, and the constant activity of ships passing by create a unique and unforgettable atmosphere. Whether you're looking for delicious seafood, unique souvenirs, or a lively night out, River Street has something for everyone. River Street's history is deeply intertwined with Savannah's role as a major port city. Originally, these warehouses stored cotton and other goods being shipped around the world. Over time, the area fell into disrepair, but a revitalization project in the 1970s transformed it into the thriving tourist destination it is today. Many of the buildings still retain their original architectural features, offering a glimpse into Savannah's rich maritime past. Look closely, and you might even spot the "Savannah gray bricks" used in many of the structures, made from local clay. River Street offers a plethora of activities. Browse the unique shops selling everything from local art to quirky souvenirs. Indulge in fresh seafood at one of the many restaurants overlooking the river. Take a riverboat cruise for stunning views of the city skyline and the Talmadge Memorial Bridge. For a taste of Savannah's culinary scene, try the local shrimp and grits, or sample some pralines from one of the candy shops. In the evening, enjoy live music at one of the bars or simply stroll along the waterfront, taking in the sights and sounds of this lively district.
