Chippewa Square: Where Forrest Gump Sat and History Comes Alive Guide
Welcome to Chippewa Square, one of Savannah's most iconic and picturesque squares! Instantly recognizable as the spot where Forrest Gump famously shared his life stories while waiting for the bus, this square offers so much more than just a movie backdrop. It's a tranquil oasis in the heart of the Historic District, perfect for a relaxing stroll or a moment of quiet contemplation. Lush greenery, towering oak trees draped in Spanish moss, and the stately James Oglethorpe Monument create a truly enchanting atmosphere. Chippewa Square was laid out in 1815 and named in honor of the American victory at the Battle of Chippewa during the War of 1812. The centerpiece of the square is the bronze statue of James Oglethorpe, the founder of the Georgia colony, sculpted by Daniel Chester French (who also created the Lincoln Memorial). Interestingly, the statue was originally intended for Wright Square, but due to objections, it was placed in Chippewa Square instead. The buildings surrounding the square are equally impressive, showcasing Savannah's stunning architecture. While you won't find Forrest Gump's bench (it was a movie prop!), you can certainly recreate the iconic scene for a fun photo op. Take a leisurely walk around the square, admiring the architecture and soaking in the Southern charm. Consider a horse-drawn carriage tour that often includes Chippewa Square on its route. Transportation
Chippewa Square is easily accessible on foot within Savannah's Historic District. Several tour companies also offer trolley or bus tours that stop at or near the square. The DOT's free Downtown Shuttle also has stops within walking distance.
