Step into a Gilded Age Wonderland: The Ringling Guide

Welcome to The Ringling, a captivating estate in Sarasota, Florida, that offers a glimpse into the opulent world of John and Mable Ringling. More than just a museum, The Ringling is a sprawling complex encompassing a stunning art museum, the Ca' d'Zan mansion, the Circus Museum, a historic Asolo Theater, and beautiful gardens. Prepare to be transported to a bygone era of art, architecture, and circus spectacle. John and Mable Ringling, of the famous Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, began building their winter residence and art museum in Sarasota in the early 20th century. Ca' d'Zan, meaning "House of John" in Venetian dialect, was completed in 1926 and served as their lavish home. John Ringling amassed an impressive collection of European art, which he intended to share with the public. Upon his death in 1936, he bequeathed his estate and art collection to the state of Florida. The Ringling has since become a premier cultural destination, preserving and showcasing the Ringlings' legacy. Visitors can explore the Museum of Art, home to a diverse collection of European paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts, including works by Rubens, Van Dyck, and Veronese. Take a guided tour of Ca' d'Zan to marvel at its Venetian Gothic architecture and opulent interiors. Delve into the history of the circus at the Circus Museum, featuring vintage posters, costumes, and equipment. Stroll through the beautiful Bayfront Gardens, dotted with sculptures and offering stunning views of Sarasota Bay. The Ringling also hosts various events, performances, and educational programs throughout the year. While there isn't a specific culinary tradition tied directly to The Ringling, the on-site restaurant offers a delightful dining experience.
