Sunken City Guide
Sunken City: Where Nature Reclaims the Concrete Jungle Guide
Prepare to be amazed by Sunken City, a truly unique and surreal attraction in San Pedro! This isn't your typical tourist spot; it's a place where the raw power of nature has dramatically reshaped the landscape. Imagine crumbling streets, tilted sidewalks, and the remnants of houses slowly being swallowed by the Pacific Ocean. It's a hauntingly beautiful and slightly eerie experience that offers incredible photo opportunities and a glimpse into the forces that shape our world. The story of Sunken City is a tale of geological instability. In 1929, a massive landslide caused a significant portion of the Point Fermin neighborhood to slide into the ocean. What was once a thriving residential area became a fractured landscape of concrete ruins. Over the years, the area has become a haven for street artists, nature enthusiasts, and those seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure. While the area is fenced off for safety reasons, the views from the perimeter are still spectacular. While you can't technically *enter* Sunken City due to safety concerns, the best activity is to walk along the fence line and take in the incredible views. The graffiti art is constantly changing, so there's always something new to see. It's a fantastic spot for photography, especially at sunset. Remember to wear comfortable shoes, as the terrain around the perimeter can be uneven. There are no food vendors directly at Sunken City, so pack your own snacks and drinks. San Pedro offers a variety of seafood restaurants, so consider grabbing a bite after your visit.
Transportation
The easiest way to reach Sunken City is by car. Parking can be limited, especially on weekends, so arrive early. You can also take the Metro Bus Line 232 to near Point Fermin Park, then walk south along Paseo Del Mar. From the park, follow the path along the cliff edge to the fenced-off area of Sunken City.
