Old Town San Diego State Historic Park Guide

Step Back in Time: Experience California's Birthplace Guide

Welcome to Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, a vibrant living history museum that transports you back to the early days of San Diego. This park preserves the rich cultural heritage of the area, showcasing life in the Mexican and early American periods of 1821 to 1872. Explore original buildings, reconstructed adobes, and immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and flavors of a bygone era. It's a fantastic destination for families, history buffs, and anyone looking for a unique San Diego experience. Old Town San Diego's history is deeply intertwined with the founding of California. In 1769, Father Junípero Serra established the first mission in Alta California here, marking the beginning of European settlement. The area flourished as a Mexican pueblo after Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821. Following the Mexican-American War, California became part of the United States in 1848. Old Town served as the commercial and social center of San Diego until the late 1860s when development shifted to what is now downtown San Diego. The State Historic Park was established in 1968 to preserve and interpret this important period. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities in Old Town. Take a guided walking tour to learn about the history and architecture of the buildings. Explore the shops and restaurants, many of which are housed in historic structures. Watch demonstrations of blacksmithing, candle making, and other traditional crafts. Sample authentic Mexican cuisine at one of the many restaurants, and don't miss the opportunity to try a refreshing margarita. Special events and festivals are held throughout the year, adding to the park's lively atmosphere. Old Town offers a delightful culinary experience, with numerous restaurants serving traditional Mexican dishes. Be sure to try the carne asada, enchiladas, and tamales. Many restaurants also offer outdoor seating, allowing you to enjoy your meal while soaking in the historic ambiance. Don't forget to indulge in some churros or Mexican hot chocolate for dessert!
