San Juan Skyway: A Road Trip Through the Clouds Guide

Embark on an unforgettable journey along the San Juan Skyway, a breathtaking scenic byway that winds through the heart of the San Juan Mountains in southwestern Colorado. This iconic route offers unparalleled views of towering peaks, verdant valleys, and historic mining towns, making it a must-do for any visitor to the region. Prepare to be captivated by the sheer beauty and dramatic landscapes that unfold around every bend. The San Juan Skyway's history is deeply intertwined with the mining boom of the late 19th century. The route originally served as a network of wagon roads connecting the bustling mining towns of Ouray, Silverton, and Telluride. These towns sprung up almost overnight as prospectors flocked to the area in search of silver and gold. The Skyway, in its modern paved form, still follows much of the original routes, offering a glimpse into the rugged past of the American West. Driving along it, you can almost hear the echoes of the miners and pioneers who once traversed these very roads. The San Juan Skyway offers a plethora of activities for tourists. Driving the entire loop is the most popular, allowing you to experience the diverse scenery at your own pace. Stop at overlooks for photo opportunities, hike to alpine lakes, explore the historic towns of Ouray, Silverton, and Telluride, or even try your hand at off-roading on some of the more challenging side roads. In the winter, the Skyway transforms into a snow-covered wonderland, offering opportunities for skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing. Don't forget to sample the local cuisine in the various towns along the way, from hearty mountain fare to gourmet dining experiences.

Transportation

The San Juan Skyway is best experienced by car. There is no public transportation that covers the entire loop. You can rent a car in nearby cities like Montrose or Durango. Be aware that some sections of the Skyway can be challenging to drive, especially in winter, and a four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended during that time. Consider starting your journey in Ridgway, Ouray, or Silverton.
