Eastern Sierra Guide
Eastern Sierra: Majestic Peaks and Unforgettable Vistas Await Guide
Embark on an unforgettable journey to the Eastern Sierra, a breathtaking mountain range that forms the eastern edge of California. Just a short drive from Ridgecrest, you'll find yourself surrounded by towering granite peaks, pristine alpine lakes, and vast wilderness areas. This is a land of adventure, offering endless opportunities for hiking, fishing, camping, and simply soaking in the awe-inspiring beauty of nature. The Eastern Sierra's dramatic landscape is the result of millions of years of geological activity. The Sierra Nevada mountain range was formed by uplift and faulting, creating the steep eastern escarpment that defines the region. Glaciers carved out the valleys and lakes, leaving behind a stunning legacy of natural beauty. The area also has a rich history, from the Native American tribes who first inhabited the land to the miners and settlers who came in search of fortune. The Eastern Sierra is an outdoor enthusiast's paradise. Hiking is a must, with trails ranging from easy lakeside strolls to challenging climbs to the summit of Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the contiguous United States. Fishing is popular in the many lakes and streams, and camping is available in numerous campgrounds throughout the region. In the winter, skiing and snowboarding are popular activities. The Eastern Sierra is also known for its unique culinary traditions, particularly its Basque cuisine, a legacy of the Basque sheepherders who once roamed the mountains. Look for restaurants serving hearty stews, grilled meats, and traditional Basque dishes in towns like Bishop and Independence.
Transportation
The Eastern Sierra region is vast, and the best way to explore it is by car. From Ridgecrest, take Highway 395 north. This highway runs along the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada and provides access to many of the region's attractions. Several bus lines also serve towns along Highway 395, such as Bishop and Mammoth Lakes, but having a car provides much greater flexibility.
