Sundial Bridge: A Work of Art and Engineering Guide
The Sundial Bridge is a pedestrian bridge in Redding, California, that also functions as a giant sundial. Designed by renowned architect Santiago Calatrava, it's a stunning example of modern architecture and engineering, attracting visitors from around the world. More than just a bridge, it's a work of art that seamlessly blends form and function. Completed in 2004, the Sundial Bridge was commissioned by the Turtle Bay Exploration Park. Calatrava's design was chosen for its aesthetic appeal and its ability to serve as a functional sundial. The bridge's 217-foot-tall pylon casts a shadow that marks the time of day on a large dial located on the north side of the bridge. The bridge's deck is made of translucent glass panels, allowing sunlight to filter through and illuminate the Sacramento River below. Visitors to the Sundial Bridge can stroll across its unique glass deck, admire the intricate design of the pylon, and learn about the science behind its sundial function. The bridge connects the north and south sides of Turtle Bay Exploration Park, providing access to the museum, gardens, and other attractions. It's a popular spot for photography, offering stunning views of the Sacramento River and the surrounding landscape. The bridge is especially beautiful at night when it is illuminated with colorful lights.
