Witness a Mountain Carved in Honor: The Crazy Horse Memorial Guide

The Crazy Horse Memorial is a mountain monument under construction on privately held land in the Black Hills of South Dakota. It represents Crazy Horse, a Lakota warrior, riding a horse and pointing into the distance. This colossal sculpture is envisioned to be the world's largest mountain carving, far surpassing Mount Rushmore in size. A visit here is a chance to witness an ongoing artistic and engineering marvel, and to learn about the history and culture of the Native American people. The memorial's history began in 1939 when Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear wrote to sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski, inviting him to carve a monument to show that Native Americans also had heroes. Ziolkowski accepted and began work in 1948. After Ziolkowski's death in 1982, his family continued the project, using his models and plans. The project is funded entirely by donations and admission fees, refusing government funding to maintain its independence. Visitors can explore the Indian Museum of North America, which houses a vast collection of Native American artifacts and art. You can also take a bus tour to the base of the mountain for a closer look at the carving (additional fee applies). The Cultural Center offers insights into Lakota culture and history through exhibits and demonstrations. Dining options are available, and you can purchase Native American crafts and souvenirs at the gift shop. While there isn't a specific culinary tradition tied directly to the memorial, the on-site restaurant often features dishes inspired by Native American cuisine.
