Hinzerling Winery Guide
Hinzerling Winery: A Legacy of Washington Wine Guide
Welcome to Hinzerling Winery, a true pioneer in Washington State's burgeoning wine industry. Nestled in the heart of the Horse Heaven Hills AVA near Prosser, this family-owned winery offers a glimpse into the past while showcasing the potential of the region's terroir. Forget the glitz and glamour of some of the larger wineries; Hinzerling is all about authenticity, passion, and a commitment to crafting exceptional wines. Prepare for a warm welcome and a taste of Washington's wine history. Hinzerling Winery's story began in 1976 when Dr. Walter Clore, often called the "Father of Washington Wine," encouraged Mike and Jerry Hinzerling to plant grapes. They were among the first to recognize the potential of the Horse Heaven Hills, now renowned for its Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and other Bordeaux varietals. The winery's original focus was on German-style wines, reflecting the family's heritage, but they quickly adapted to the changing tastes and climate, embracing the varietals that thrive in the region's warm days and cool nights. Over the years, Hinzerling has remained a small, family-run operation, dedicated to producing handcrafted wines with minimal intervention. A visit to Hinzerling Winery is a truly unique experience. You can enjoy a relaxed tasting in their charming tasting room, often hosted by a member of the Hinzerling family. Sample their award-winning wines, learn about their history, and soak in the beautiful views of the surrounding vineyards. While they don't have a restaurant on-site, you're welcome to bring a picnic to enjoy on their grounds. And don't leave without picking up a bottle (or two!) of their signature wines to take home a piece of Washington wine history. While Prosser doesn't have a specific culinary tradition, the winery is surrounded by fertile farmland, so expect fresh, seasonal ingredients to be featured in local restaurants.
