Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park Guide
Soar Above the Hudson: A Stroll on the World's Longest Elevated Pedestrian Bridge Guide
Experience the Hudson River like never before at the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park. This remarkable pedestrian bridge, the longest elevated pedestrian span in the world, offers breathtaking panoramic views of the river, the surrounding mountains, and the charming towns that dot the landscape. Prepare to be amazed by the engineering marvel and the stunning natural beauty that unfolds before you. Originally opened in 1889 as a railroad bridge, the Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge played a vital role in connecting the East Coast with the Midwest. After a devastating fire in 1974, the bridge was abandoned and fell into disrepair. However, a dedicated group of local residents envisioned a new life for the bridge as a pedestrian walkway. Through years of fundraising and advocacy, their dream became a reality, and the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park opened in 2009. A visit to the Walkway offers a variety of activities. Take a leisurely stroll or bike ride across the bridge, soaking in the stunning views. Learn about the bridge's history at the visitor center. Connect to the trails on either side of the river for longer hikes and explorations. The Walkway also hosts various events throughout the year, including concerts, festivals, and educational programs. While the Walkway itself doesn't have a specific culinary tradition, the nearby cities of Poughkeepsie and Highland offer a diverse range of dining options.
