Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) Guide
Ignite Your Curiosity: Explore Science and Innovation at OMSI Guide
The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) is a leading science museum located on the east bank of the Willamette River in Portland. OMSI is dedicated to inspiring curiosity through engaging exhibits, hands-on learning experiences, and innovative educational programs. Whether you're a child or an adult, OMSI offers a fascinating journey into the world of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Founded in 1944 as the Oregon Museum Foundation, OMSI has evolved from a small collection of artifacts to a sprawling complex featuring multiple exhibit halls, a planetarium, a submarine, and a state-of-the-art theater. The museum's mission is to foster a deeper understanding of science and technology and to encourage lifelong learning. Over the years, OMSI has become a vital resource for the community, providing educational opportunities for students, teachers, and families. At OMSI, you can explore a wide range of interactive exhibits covering topics such as space exploration, paleontology, chemistry, physics, and the human body. Climb aboard the USS Blueback submarine, Oregon's only submarine available for public tours. Catch a show at the Kendall Planetarium or the Empirical Theater. Participate in hands-on experiments in the chemistry lab or the maker space. OMSI also hosts special events, workshops, and camps throughout the year. While OMSI doesn't have a specific culinary tradition, the onsite cafe offers a variety of food and beverage options, and the museum's location near the Central Eastside Industrial District provides access to numerous restaurants and breweries.
Transportation
OMSI is accessible by public transportation. The MAX Light Rail Orange Line stops at the OMSI/SE Water Ave station, which is directly adjacent to the museum. Several bus lines also serve the area, including lines 6, 17, and 70. Limited parking is available in the OMSI parking lot for a fee.
