Sunnylands Center & Gardens Guide

A Mid-Century Oasis: Explore Sunnylands Guide

Step into a world of tranquility and elegance at Sunnylands Center & Gardens, the former winter estate of Walter and Leonore Annenberg. This stunning mid-century modern complex offers a glimpse into the lives of these influential philanthropists and provides a serene escape from the desert landscape. Explore the meticulously designed gardens, admire the architecture, and learn about the Annenbergs' legacy of diplomacy and cultural enrichment. Sunnylands, also known as the "Camp David of the West," was completed in 1966 and served as a retreat for presidents, dignitaries, and celebrities for decades. Walter Annenberg was a prominent businessman, publisher, and philanthropist, while his wife, Leonore, served as the U.S. Chief of Protocol under President Ronald Reagan. The estate hosted numerous important meetings and events, playing a significant role in international relations. The center now serves as a venue for high-level retreats and public programs focused on global issues. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities at Sunnylands, including guided tours of the historic house (reservations required), self-guided walks through the gardens, and participation in educational programs. The gardens feature a diverse collection of desert plants, sculptures, and water features. The cafe offers light refreshments and meals. While there isn't a specific culinary tradition associated with Sunnylands, the cafe offers a menu that reflects the estate's commitment to sustainability and local sourcing.
