Oregon City Municipal Elevator Guide
Ride Through History: The Oregon City Municipal Elevator Guide
Prepare for a unique and unforgettable experience at the Oregon City Municipal Elevator, often dubbed "The Elevator to Nowhere." This iconic structure connects the downtown area of Oregon City, located at river level, with the residential neighborhoods perched high atop the bluff. More than just a mode of transportation, the elevator offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Willamette River and the surrounding landscape. The Oregon City Municipal Elevator boasts a fascinating history. Originally built in 1915, it was one of only a handful of outdoor municipal elevators in the world. The elevator was constructed to alleviate the arduous climb up the steep bluff, making it easier for residents to access the downtown area. Rebuilt in 1955, the current elevator continues to serve as a vital link between the upper and lower parts of the city, while also attracting tourists from far and wide. Take a ride on the elevator and marvel at the stunning views that unfold before you. At the top, explore the observation deck and capture memorable photos of the Willamette River, the historic downtown, and the Cascade Mountains in the distance. Visit the adjacent McLoughlin Promenade, a scenic walkway that offers even more breathtaking vistas. While the elevator itself doesn't have a culinary tradition, Oregon City's downtown area is home to a variety of restaurants and cafes where you can sample local cuisine. Don't miss the opportunity to try some fresh seafood or indulge in a delicious Oregon-grown berry pie.
Transportation
TriMet bus lines 79 and 99 serve the Oregon City Transit Center, which is a short walk to the lower entrance of the elevator. From the Transit Center, follow Main Street towards the river. The elevator entrance will be on your left.
