Assateague Island National Seashore Guide
Wild Ponies and Pristine Beaches: Assateague Island National Seashore Guide
Escape the hustle and bustle of Ocean City and discover the natural beauty of Assateague Island National Seashore. Just a short drive from the resort town, Assateague offers a completely different experience, with miles of pristine beaches, wild horses roaming freely, and a diverse ecosystem waiting to be explored. It's a haven for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone seeking a peaceful retreat. Assateague Island has a rich history, shaped by the forces of nature and human activity. Originally inhabited by Native Americans, the island was later used for grazing livestock. The famous wild horses, believed to be descendants of domesticated animals that were released or shipwrecked centuries ago, have adapted to the harsh environment and become a symbol of the island. In 1965, Assateague Island National Seashore was established to protect the island's natural resources and provide recreational opportunities for visitors. Assateague offers a wide range of activities for visitors of all ages. You can spend the day swimming, sunbathing, or surfing on the beach. Explore the island's trails on foot or by bike, keeping an eye out for the wild horses and other wildlife. Go kayaking or canoeing through the marshes and bays, or try your hand at fishing or crabbing. The island is also a popular spot for birdwatching, with a variety of migratory birds passing through each year. While there are no restaurants on the island itself, you can pack a picnic lunch to enjoy on the beach or at one of the designated picnic areas.
