Shadows-on-the-Teche: Step Back in Time in Louisiana's Bayou Country Guide
Welcome to Shadows-on-the-Teche, a stunning antebellum home nestled in the heart of New Iberia, Louisiana. More than just a beautiful house, it's a portal to the past, offering a glimpse into the lives of the Weeks family and the complex history of the region. Prepare to be captivated by its architectural grandeur, its poignant stories, and the lush beauty of its surrounding gardens. This National Trust Historic Site is a must-see for anyone interested in Southern history, architecture, or simply experiencing the charm of Louisiana's bayou country. The Shadows-on-the-Teche was built in 1834 by sugar planter David Weeks for his wife, Mary Conrad Weeks. The house remained in the Weeks family for over a century, witnessing the rise and fall of the sugar industry, the Civil War, and the changing social landscape of the South. In 1958, William Weeks Hall, the last family member to live in the house, bequeathed it to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, ensuring its preservation for future generations. The house stands as a testament to the wealth generated by sugar cane cultivation and the lives, both free and enslaved, that were intertwined with its production. A visit to Shadows-on-the-Teche offers a variety of engaging activities. Take a guided tour of the house to learn about the Weeks family, their lifestyle, and the history of the property. Explore the beautiful gardens, filled with native plants and flowers, and imagine life in the 19th century. Participate in special events and programs, such as lectures, workshops, and living history demonstrations. While New Iberia boasts a rich culinary scene, Shadows-on-the-Teche itself doesn't have a specific culinary tradition associated with it. However, be sure to explore the local restaurants and sample Cajun and Creole cuisine, a true taste of Louisiana.
