McCloud Falls is a stunning series of three waterfalls located on the McCloud River, offering a diverse and breathtaking natural experience. Each of the three falls – Lower, Middle, and Upper – has its own unique character and charm, making it a must-see destination for nature lovers visiting the Mount Shasta area. The falls are easily accessible and offer various hiking and viewing opportunities. The McCloud River and its falls have a rich history, dating back to the Native American tribes who inhabited the area for centuries. The river was later named after Alexander McLeod, a Hudson's Bay Company trapper who explored the region in the 19th century. The area became a popular destination for logging and recreation in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the falls have been a beloved attraction ever since. Visitors to McCloud Falls can enjoy hiking to each of the three falls. The Lower Falls are easily accessible with a short, paved trail. The Middle Falls are the most popular, with a large swimming area and picnic spots. The Upper Falls require a slightly longer hike but offer a more secluded and dramatic view. Swimming is allowed in designated areas, but be aware of the strong currents and cold water. The area is also popular for fishing and camping.
Transportation
McCloud Falls is located off Highway 89, east of McCloud. From McCloud, take Highway 89 east. Turn onto FSR 13 (also known as McCloud River Loop). Follow the signs to the various falls. Parking is available at each of the falls. There is no public transportation directly to McCloud Falls. Driving is the only practical option.
