Phelps Lake: A Hidden Gem in Grand Teton National Park Guide
Phelps Lake, nestled at the base of the Teton Range, offers a more secluded and tranquil experience compared to some of the park's more accessible lakes. This pristine alpine lake is surrounded by forests and offers stunning views of the mountains, making it a perfect destination for hiking, swimming (if you're brave enough for the cold water!), and simply soaking in the natural beauty. It's a place to escape the crowds and connect with the wilderness. Phelps Lake's history is intertwined with the Rockefeller family, who played a significant role in the establishment of Grand Teton National Park. Laurance S. Rockefeller, a conservationist and philanthropist, owned a ranch on the shores of the lake, known as the JY Ranch. He later donated the land to the park, ensuring its preservation for future generations. The Rockefeller Preserve Center, located near the lake, offers educational programs and exhibits about the park's natural and cultural history. Activities at Phelps Lake include hiking the scenic trails that encircle the lake, such as the popular Phelps Lake Loop. This trail offers varying levels of difficulty, with options for both leisurely strolls and more challenging climbs. Swimming is possible, but be prepared for the chilly water temperatures! Fishing is also permitted with a valid Wyoming fishing license. While there are no specific culinary traditions directly linked to Phelps Lake, packing a picnic lunch to enjoy by the lake is a must.
Transportation
To reach Phelps Lake, you'll need to drive to the Laurence S. Rockefeller Preserve, located off the Moose-Wilson Road. From Moose Junction, take the Moose-Wilson Road north. The Preserve is well-signed. Parking is available at the Preserve's visitor center. From the visitor center, you can hike to Phelps Lake. The Jenny Lake Shuttle Boat does not provide service to Phelps Lake. There is no public transportation directly to the Laurence S. Rockefeller Preserve. You will need a personal vehicle.
