Knapp's Castle Guide
Knapp's Castle: Ruins with a View Guide
Knapp's Castle offers a unique and somewhat eerie experience. These are the ruins of a once-grand sandstone mansion perched high in the Santa Ynez Mountains above Montecito. While the castle itself is no longer intact, the remaining walls and foundations provide a glimpse into its past and offer breathtaking panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the surrounding landscape. It's a popular spot for hiking, photography, and enjoying the natural beauty of the area. Originally built in 1916 by George Owen Knapp, the founder of Union Carbide, the castle was intended to be his mountaintop retreat. Designed in a grand architectural style, it boasted stunning views and luxurious amenities. Sadly, the castle was destroyed by a fire in 1940, leaving behind only the stone ruins that remain today. Despite its tragic history, Knapp's Castle continues to attract visitors who are drawn to its beauty and historical significance. Visitors can explore the ruins of Knapp's Castle, taking in the stunning views and imagining what the castle must have looked like in its prime. Hiking trails lead to and around the castle, offering opportunities for outdoor recreation and exploration. The site is particularly popular for photography, especially at sunset, when the light casts a golden glow on the ruins and the surrounding landscape. Please note that the site is unsupervised, and visitors should exercise caution when exploring the ruins.
