Step Inside a Home Carved in Stone: Hole N' The Rock Guide

Hole N' The Rock is a unique roadside attraction located just south of Moab, Utah. It's a home carved directly into a massive sandstone rock, offering a quirky and fascinating glimpse into the life and vision of its creators. More than just a dwelling, it's a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance. The story of Hole N' The Rock began in the 1940s when Albert Christensen started carving into the rock face. He and his wife, Gladys, spent over 20 years blasting and chiseling away at the sandstone, creating a 5,000-square-foot home with 14 rooms. Albert passed away in 1957, but Gladys continued to live in the home and operate it as a tourist attraction until her death in 1974. Today, visitors can tour the home, which is filled with original furnishings and artifacts. The attraction also includes a petting zoo, a general store, and a sculpture garden. You can also see Albert's original tools and equipment used to carve the home. While there are no specific culinary traditions associated with Hole N' The Rock itself, the general store offers snacks and refreshments.
