Dark Angel: A Towering Sentinel of the Desert Guide
Dark Angel is a striking, free-standing sandstone tower located in the Devils Garden section of Arches National Park. This imposing monolith, blackened by desert varnish, stands as a testament to the power of erosion and the unique geological formations found within the park. It's a popular destination for hikers and photographers seeking to capture its dramatic silhouette against the vast desert landscape. While Dark Angel itself doesn't have a specific historical narrative beyond its natural formation, it's situated within Arches National Park, which has a rich history of human interaction. Native American tribes, including the Ute and Paiute, inhabited the area for thousands of years, leaving behind petroglyphs and other evidence of their presence. Later, ranchers and prospectors explored the region, drawn by the potential for resources. Arches National Monument was established in 1929 to protect the area's unique geological features, and it was later designated a National Park in 1971. Visitors to Dark Angel can enjoy hiking to the base of the tower, taking in the panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The hike is relatively easy, but be sure to bring plenty of water and sun protection, as the desert sun can be intense. Transportation
Dark Angel is located within Arches National Park. To reach the trailhead, you'll need to drive into the park. From Moab, take US-191 north for about 5 miles to the Arches National Park entrance. Follow the main park road to the Devils Garden Trailhead. From the trailhead, it's a relatively short hike to Dark Angel. Note that parking at Devils Garden Trailhead can fill up quickly, especially during peak season, so arrive early or be prepared to wait for a spot.
