Reach for the Sky: Rich Mountain Fire Tower Awaits! Guide
Perched atop Rich Mountain, the highest peak in Arkansas, the Rich Mountain Fire Tower offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Ouachita National Forest. This historic tower provides a unique opportunity to connect with nature, appreciate the stunning landscape, and step back in time to an era when fire towers played a crucial role in protecting our forests. Prepare for a scenic drive and a rewarding climb to experience the beauty of the Arkansas wilderness from a truly elevated perspective. Built in 1939 by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), the Rich Mountain Fire Tower served as a vital lookout point for detecting wildfires. During its operational years, dedicated fire watchers would scan the horizon, identifying and reporting any signs of smoke to help prevent devastating forest fires. The tower remained in service until the 1970s, when advancements in technology made aerial surveillance more efficient. Today, it stands as a testament to the ingenuity and dedication of those who worked to protect our natural resources. While the primary activity is soaking in the incredible views, the journey to the fire tower is an adventure in itself. The drive up Rich Mountain is scenic, with opportunities to stop at overlooks and enjoy the surrounding forest. Once you reach the tower, you can climb the stairs to the observation deck (check for accessibility as some sections may be closed). Take your time to admire the 360-degree views, identify landmarks, and appreciate the vastness of the Ouachita National Forest. Hiking trails also surround the area, offering opportunities for further exploration. While in Mena, be sure to try some of the local comfort food at nearby restaurants.
